When a storage cleaner is the wrong tool
Four things fill a phone and a cleaner addresses one of them. What the storage screen already tells you, and the five minutes that actually free the space.

A storage cleaner removes caches and duplicates, but phones fill up because of photos, video and one app's offline downloads. Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage (or Settings → Storage on Android), read the top three entries, delete large videos and clear downloads inside the apps that made them — that recovers most of it in about five minutes.

The phone says it is full. You install something that promises to clean it, it scans for a minute, and it reports that it can free 4.2 GB. You tap the button, it frees rather less than that, and a week later the phone is full again.
A storage cleaner is an app that finds files it judges to be removable — caches, duplicates, large media — and deletes them. Sometimes it is exactly right. But storage problems have four different causes and a cleaner only addresses one of them, which is why the same phone fills up again on the same schedule.
Find out what is actually taking the space
Before installing anything, look. Both platforms report this and neither report is hidden.
On iPhone: Settings → General → iPhone Storage. A bar chart by category, then every app listed by size, largest first.
On Android: Settings → Storage, with the same breakdown by type.
Read the top three entries. In almost every case, one of these four is the answer:
- Photos and video. Usually the majority, and often by a wide margin. A few thousand photos and a handful of 4K videos is tens of gigabytes.
- One app's data. Streaming, podcast and map apps download content and rarely clean it up. A single app holding 15 GB of offline downloads is common and invisible until you look.
- Messaging attachments. Years of received photos and videos in chat history, stored per conversation.
- System and caches. Real, but smaller than people assume, and the operating system reclaims most of it automatically under pressure.
A cleaner works on the fourth category. Your problem is almost certainly the first or second.
That mismatch is the whole subject. Freeing a gigabyte of cache from a phone whose photo library is 60 GB solves nothing for more than a few days.
When a cleaner genuinely helps
A storage cleaner has real uses, and they are narrower than the marketing suggests.

The honest version of the value is that a good tool is a finder rather than a cleaner: sorting your library by size, surfacing burst shots and duplicates, showing videos you have not opened in two years. Where cleaners do harm
A storage cleaner can also cost you something, in four ways, and the first two are common.
Deleting originals of things you thought were backed up. If photos sync only when charging on Wi-Fi, a photo taken this morning exists in one place. A cleaner freeing space by removing local copies can remove the only copy — and the sync service will treat that deletion as intentional and propagate it.
Chasing "System Data". This category is opaque by design and largely not yours to manage. Apps promising to reduce it usually cannot, and the manoeuvres people try — repeated restores, aggressive cache clearing — cost hours and often make things worse.
Permissions disproportionate to the job. An app that wants full photo library access, file system access and analytics to report on your storage is asking for a great deal to produce a number the operating system already shows you.
Subscriptions for a one-off task. Storage cleanup is not a recurring need for most people. A monthly charge for something done twice a year is a poor trade, and free trials that convert quietly are common in this category specifically.
The first one is the one that causes real loss. Before any bulk deletion, confirm that what you are deleting exists somewhere else — actually confirm it, by opening the other location, not by assuming the sync ran.
What actually frees space, in order
Ranked by gigabytes recovered per minute spent — none of these needs a storage cleaner.
- Delete videos you will not watch again. A handful of 4K clips is several gigabytes. Sort by size and look at the top twenty; this alone usually solves the problem.
- Clear offline downloads inside the apps that made them. Streaming, podcasts, maps. Each app has its own control and it works properly, unlike an external tool guessing.
- Empty "Recently Deleted". Photos stay for 30 days after deletion. People delete a hundred pictures, see no change, and conclude that deleting does not help.
- Deal with messaging attachments. Both major messaging apps have per-conversation storage management. Media from group chats is usually the largest slice.
- Offload unused apps. iOS can remove the app while keeping its data, reversibly, and there is a setting to do it automatically.
- Then, and only then, look at duplicate photos. Real, but a smaller number than the previous five and more work.
Steps one and two typically account for the majority of what is recoverable. Neither requires an app, and both take about five minutes.
What about a computer rather than a phone?
The same reasoning applies with different numbers, and one important difference: on a desktop you can see the whole filesystem, which makes finding the cause far easier than on a phone.
Start with a disk usage visualiser rather than a cleaner. These draw the drive as nested rectangles sized by what each folder holds, and the culprit is usually visible within seconds. Four categories account for most surprises:
- Virtual machines and container images. Tens of gigabytes, easy to forget entirely, and they grow rather than shrink.
- Development caches and build artefacts. Dependency folders, build outputs and package caches accumulate per project and are regenerable, which makes them safe to delete.
- Downloads. Years of installers and archives that were needed once.
- Old device backups. A single phone backup can be well over a hundred gigabytes, and several accumulate silently.
The last one is worth checking today if you have ever backed up a phone to a computer, because nothing prompts you to remove superseded backups and they are among the largest single files most people own.
What to avoid on desktop is the same as on mobile, more strongly: tools that offer to clean the registry, remove system files, or "optimise" the operating system. The category has a long history of causing the problems it claims to fix, and the genuine wins — large files, old backups, regenerable caches — are all reachable without granting anything deep access.
Stopping it happening again
Three settings, set once.
Turn on optimised photo storage. Full-resolution originals live in the cloud, smaller versions on the device, and the phone fetches the original when you need it. This is the single most effective change available and it is a toggle.
Record video at a sensible resolution. 4K at 60fps is roughly four times the size of 1080p at 30 for footage that is mostly watched on a phone screen. Change it once and the problem stops growing.
Set downloads to expire. Most streaming and podcast apps can delete played content automatically. Off by default, and it is the setting that prevents the second-largest category from returning.
