Apps worth having on a watch, and what they cannot do

The wrist is the smallest screen you own and the only one you cannot ignore. Three things it is genuinely better at, and four reasons most of what you install gets removed.

Most people install a dozen, use two, and conclude the platform is thin. The platform is fine. The dozen were phone apps wearing a smaller layout.

What the wrist is actually good at

Three things, and a watch app that does one of them well beats one that does five badly.

  • Capture before the thought is gone. Two seconds from raising your arm to recording something, with no unlocking, no app grid, no typing.
  • Notify with context. Not that something happened, but the one number or line that tells you whether to react.
  • Measure what only the wrist knows. Heart rate, movement, position — data the phone in your pocket cannot see.

Everything else is a phone task being performed awkwardly. Reading an article, comparing options, filling a form, browsing anything — all of it is worse on a watch than on the device already in your pocket.

Why do most watch apps get uninstalled?

Because they were designed on a phone, in a simulator, sitting down. Four patterns account for nearly all of it.

They require precision. A tap target sized for a fingertip on a 6-inch screen is a coin toss on a 40mm one. Watch interfaces need fewer, larger targets, and a list of eight rows is already too many.

They assume you are looking. The screen sleeps in seconds. An app that expects sustained attention is fighting the hardware, and the hardware wins.

They wait on the phone. Many watch apps are a thin front end that asks the phone for data over Bluetooth. When the phone is in another room, the app shows a spinner and then an error, which is exactly when the watch would have been useful.

They duplicate the phone. If the watch version does what the phone does, the phone wins every time, because it is better at it.

The third one is the quiet killer, and it is a genuine architectural choice rather than a design mistake. An app that keeps its own data on the watch works on a run without a phone. One that relays does not, and the failure appears exactly in the situation the customer bought the watch for.

What to check before you install one

Four questions, and you can answer three from the store listing.

  1. Does it work without the phone nearby? The listing usually says so if it does, because it is a selling point. Silence generally means no.
  2. Is there a complication? A complication is the small element on the watch face itself. An app with a good one is used daily; an app you have to find in a grid is used twice.
  3. What does it do when there is no signal? Anything fitness-related should record and sync later. Anything that cannot is a phone app.
  4. How many taps to the main action? If the answer is more than two, it will lose to picking up the phone.

Question 2 is the one that predicts retention best. The watch face is the only surface people actually look at, and an app that does not reach it is competing for an app grid nobody opens.

The category that genuinely belongs there

Capture is the clearest case, and it is worth being specific about why.

The value is not that a watch records audio — a phone does that better. It is the two seconds. An idea in a meeting, a measurement while your hands are dirty, a reminder while walking: the gap between having the thought and starting the recording is where the thought is lost, and the wrist closes it.

Three behaviours dominate the drain, and they are worth knowing before you install a set of them:

  • Background refresh. An app that updates its complication frequently is doing work all day, and several such apps compound.
  • Independent connectivity. A watch using its own cellular or Wi-Fi rather than the phone's connection costs considerably more.
  • Sensors. Continuous heart rate or GPS is the largest single cost, which is why a workout is measured in hours of battery rather than percent.

The practical consequence is a budget. Two or three apps with complications is comfortable; eight is a watch that does not reach the evening. If a watch suddenly stops lasting the day, the cause is almost always something recently installed that refreshes in the background, not the battery ageing.

Is it worth having a watch app at all if you build software?

Only under a specific condition, and it is worth stating because the answer is often no.

Build one when your product has a moment that happens away from the phone. A running app, a medication reminder, a two-second capture, a live number someone checks repeatedly. Those justify the second interface.

Do not build one because competitors have one. A watch app is a separate target, a separate layout, a separate set of constraints and a separate review cycle — Apple documents the design expectations in its watchOS human interface guidelines, and the gap between them and phone conventions is larger than teams expect. A poorly maintained watch app is worse than none, because it is a visible surface that looks abandoned.

The honest test: name the moment. If you cannot describe a specific situation, in a sentence, where someone would rather use their wrist than their pocket, the app has no reason to exist.
